Dolpo Trekking
Dolpo Trekking is a remote and very less explored high altitude region in Dolpa district in Northwestern Nepal. Dolpo Region is protected by Shey Phoksundo National Park and extends in the North to the Tibetan border. This is a less populated region with no sophisticated facilities, but with great trekking and tourism potential. We can see a profound Tibetan influence in the culture and lifestyle of Dolpo residents. This region is surrounded by mountain chain including Dhaulagiri (8167 meters) with the settlement at 2300 to 4300 meters.
Dolpo Trek has its significant history recorded since the 8th century during the time of the Yarlung Dynasty in Tibetan territories. Dolpo fell under the Kingdom of Lo during the 14th century. During the 15th century, history mentions this region as a temporarily independent kingdom of the Ra nag dynasty. Only after 1769, Gurkhas conquered Lo Kingdom with the current Dolpa district during the Nepal unification campaign.
Since the products of this region were insufficient for survival, Dolpo people traditionally traded salt brought from Tibet for grains and shelter in Southern region of Nepal. Dolpo region and its valleys are blessed with great landscape, dazing mountain views, beautiful high altitude lakes and civilization of Buddhist people inheriting Tibetan and Western Nepali culture. Some endangered species like Himalayan blue sheep, snow leopards and some rare birds are also encountered in this region. A unique combination of nature, culture and people makes Dolpo a must-visit destination. Our Nepal Gateway Trekking Team would wish to help you explore this hidden adventurous region and help you create an exclusive Dolpo experience.
